Bridge Safety

A bridge is a structure used by people and vehicles to cross waterways or other roadways. A bridge must be strong and sturdy enough to support its own weight and the weight of the vehicles passing over it. It also must withstand natural occurrences, such as weathering.

The United States has 578,000 highway bridges, which are lifelines of the US commerce. The average life span of highway bridges is about 75 years and the majority of bridges currently in use were built after 1945. However, significant environmental damage to bridges requiring repair. Corrosion, cracking, and other damage can all affect a bridge's load carrying capacity. Therefore, all of the elements that directly affect the performance of the bridge including the footing, substructure, deck, and superstructure must be periodically inspected. Engineering technicians inspect existing bridges in order to determine their physical condition, maintenance needs, and potential hazards. It is necessary to maintain the constructions in order to prevent any disaster. Deck sweeping and just ordinary washing help to remove so called traction material, such as sand or salt residue; than application of protective coats and of course, structural repairs.
